Croots Farm Shop to support Derbyshire children’s charity for 2012

We will be supporting two charities during 2012, we will continue to raise money for the Shire Horse Society in recognition of the Shire horses that live in the fields around the shop. We will also support Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre – a charity that provides disadvantaged children in Derbyshire with holidays at it’s centre at Skegness.

The charity provides 450 holiday places per season and needs to raise more than £150,000 a year to continue its work.

Steve Croot, who runs Croots Farm Shop, said: “With the support of our customers and staff, we have raised many hundreds of pounds for local and national charities since we launched in June 2008, and this year we hope to continue the good work by collecting for the Shire Horse Society and Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre.

“We plan to have a number of events and competitions over the next 12 months which we hope will raise much-needed funds for these two causes.”

Croots Farm Shop hands over donation to Derbyshire children’s charity Treats

A £1,200 cheque has been handed over to Derbyshire children’s charity Treats after a sponsored walk by staff at Croots Farm Shop.

The staff clocked up 66 miles by walking up and down the farm shop’s driveway to mark the shops third birthday.

Now the proceeds have been collected and handed over to Treats, which will use the money to help underprivileged children with support for gifts, holidays and trips away.

“We are very grateful for the support of Croots Farm Shop, its staff and its customers who have donated to Treats,” said Elaine Blount chairman of Treats.

Croots has chosen Treats as its adopted charity for the past two years. It also supports the Shire Horse Society.

“We are happy to help a local charity like Treats, which has been doing good work in Derbyshire for 25 years now,” said Steve Croot, who runs the farm shop. “We wanted to mark our third birthday by giving something to our local community, and we are very grateful for the support received from our loyal customers.”

Since being launched by a group of professional Derbyshire businesswomen more than 25 years ago, Treats has raised more than £500,000 to help local underprivileged youngsters, with some cash also going to community projects.

Allestree couple launch new venture with support from Croots Farm Shop.

Croots is supporting the launch of a new local food business by becoming the first outlet to stock products from the Coriander Garden.

Allestree couple Kuldip and Kash Burhm have been making their Authentic Tamarind Chutney for friends for many years.

Now they have decided to launch the product, under the brand name the Coriander Garden…a taste of Indian home cooking, onto a wider market – with encouragement from Steve Croot, who runs Croots Farm Shop, near Duffield.

Croots has just become the first outlet to take the Coriander Garden Authentic Tamarind Chutney onto its shelves.

“We have been making the chutney for years, and it was friends who said we should sell it,” said Kuldip. “Steve was very keen from day one. We gave him a taster and he was amazed at the flavour and quality of the product.”

The couple have excellent credentials when it comes to food – in 2005 they beat chef Gino D’Acampo with their curry-making skills in an episode of the TV programme Chef v Britain filmed at Chatsworth.

“Because Steve has given us encouragement we have a special relationship with him. He wants to help us and we want to help him,” said Kuldip. “We’re very excited that our chutney is now in Croots Farm Shop.”

By day Kuldip works at Datapath Ltd, Derby, and Kash at Reckitt Benckiser, Derby.

The couple have also developed an onion bhaji dry mix which is also being sold at Croots.

Steve said: “We were very impressed when we tasted the Authentic Tamarind Chutney that Kul and Kash produce. They’ve worked hard to gain all the compliances necessary to sell food products, and we’re delighted that Croots has become the first shop to have their chutney on its shelves. Our customers love authentic, quality products.”

Meet the Shire Horse Day – Sunday 17th July

Visitors will have the chance to find out more about the gentle giants of the horse world when we stage our Meet the Shire Horse Day later this month.

The event will take place on Sunday July 17th at the shop

The farm where the shop is has been home to Shire horses for around 45 years, and has bred many award-winning animals. Foals born at the farm have moved to countries all over the world.

The event, which runs from 11am to 2pm, features plaiting displays and the chance to talk to Shire horse owner and judge Jim Yates to find out how the horses are cared for. There will also be horse-related activities for children.

Steve Croot says “There’s something quite special about Shire horses. Many of our customers love them and often ask questions about them when they come to the shop, so we thought it would be nice to have a day where visitors can get to know some of the horses and foals that live at the farm and learn more about them”

“Shire horses have been in the family for generations and have lived at Farnah House Farm for decades. Jim is renowned in the world of Shire horses, and has judged at Shire horse shows in many different countries.”

Croots Scoop Four Accolades At The British Pie Awards 2011

This week we scooped four accolades at the British Pie Awards 2011 including a gold for our popular steak and kidney pie.

We also won a silver award in the dessert pie category for our rhubarb and cherry pie, and bronze awards for our pork pie and little mutton pie.

The awards, organised and hosted by the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, featured 619 pies produced by bakers and butchers from across the UK. Judges included food writers, authors and chefs.

“It was the first time we’d entered the British Pie Awards and the whole team at Croots is absolutely chuffed to win four awards, including a gold,” said Steve Croot.

“We were up against some really top quality competition, so to come away with a gold, a silver and two bronze awards is brilliant.”
